Hi, friends -
I am bringing you a piece from the archives today. I first wrote this in 2023, yet it feels alive, somehow.
I offer it as a benediction: what in these words stirs you, enlivens you?
With care.
When I was younger, I was so certain there would be a time where I would arrive.
This was a convenient fiction, steadily fed by a diet of happily-ever-afters, the concept of “growing up,” and tales of careers that spanned decades.
I figured life went like this: an upward tick through childhood and adolescence; some rumbling around in college and maybe a little after, and then - bam! Smooth sailing. A long line that only tilted downward at the time of retirement, then death.
That was the story I knew, and gosh, I figured - once I Got There - I would feel so good!
Ah, but of course - it does not work like that.
Lately, I have been thinking a lot about the concept of arriving. More specifically, about how life is just a series of arrivals, one after another - continuously.
Let me be clear right away: we can absolutely arrive to times, places, locations that are more supportive or stable for us. This conversation does not discount the need for stability, the need for being held in our own lives.
But there is not a time when we capitol-A-Arrive. Where we never again face heartache, or insecurity. Where we never question, wonder, or doubt. Where we do not have our own beautiful work to do. Where - if we are partnered - we work with our partner, too.
There is - of course! - a beauty in this; in the continuous growing, learning, unfolding.
But seeing it for what it is - means releasing the narrative of The Happily Ever After. Of everything unfolding before us in bliss and harmony and perfection.
And it means - perhaps above all - accepting this life, in all its strangeness, in all its bump and bruise and challenge, all its beauty and terror and horrid and wonder and magic and awful and great and weep and weft and wanting and arrival -
As it is.
As it shows up.
Right here. Right now.

Help A Human
This week, I simply want to turn my heart & prayer to the beloved Joanna Macy, incredible teacher & steward of this world. She is in the process of transitioning to the great mystery, the great beyond. May we hold her in kindness as she moves there. Thank you, Joanna, for all your wisdom.
See you next week!
